Inverloch, 13th -18th February

We based ourselves at Inverloch for this week - a great little town (a bit bigger than Keith). We camped in the Foreshore Reserve, a stones throw from the Inlet beach, not the Bass Strait beach.

The walkway over to the beach can be seen between the ute and van.
This area was fascinating, as Anderson Inlet runs in a sandy opening from the sea and quite a few kms inside the coastline ( a bit like a mini version of the Coorong, except that it is sea water). Mostly it is fairly shallow, with a couple of deeper channels for boating. As the tide comes and goes, because it is shallow, it can change really fast from a series of shallow 'puddles" on an expansive beach to a vast, but shallow sea.

Entrance from sea to Inlet, centre of horizon
Now a  series of  'puddles', where we could jump from one sun-warmed water-hole to the next. Who needs a "spa"?

For a bit more action, with the body boards, we went around to the main town surf beach. Was great fun, until a couple of us got caught in the wrong spot - too far away from the wave to ride over it, and too far away from the shore to get out of it's way. Uh-oh!!...Lily and I got thoroughly dumped! Jon said he had the best ride of the day, and I'm not sure what happened to Jed. I think he managed to evade most of it. Anyway, the best thing about it was that my 'sunnies' were lost, never to be seen again!! I was needing some new ones!

The kids waiting for the next "big one"
Straight out to Bass Strait. This was a great beach, wide, clear and not too much of a drop off. The negatives (particularly in Lily's opinion were the rather large sting-ray that swam past her and the thousands of tiny crabs covering the beach). We assured her that they were all more scared of her than she was of them. Well, it sounded good anyway!! and the stingray did swim away from Jon and her when it saw them, and the crabs did dig into the beach when we walked nearby!!

Hey! I thought we were travelling aroumd Australia!?? but we won't be able to if it sinks! A fascinating rock formation just out of Inverloch. We didn't get around the other side of it to take a photo of it the "right way".

Another day, another fascinating encounter with "wildlife". I never expected to see an echidna on the beach! For some reason I was obviously under a 'mis-apprehension', that echidnas liked dry, dusty places with lots of scrub, shelter and ants. I could'nt see a lot of any of those things in this environment. Although, we presumed he wandered down from the scrubby sandhill at the edge of the Inlet.
Check out the following link if you want to see the video footage: http://www.youtube.com/user/Mrscate67#g/a

I don't know where he was headed, but I hope he can swim!
Doesn't mind getting his feet wet

We don't like getting our feet wet tho' - and as the rain cloud appeared and the wind came up we headed for ...Wilson's Promontory! Are we nuts?! Find out in the next post
