Gibb River Road

Stocked up, fueled up, school changed to be more flexible and we were ready to tackle it!

Left Kununurra: Tuesday, 9th August
Arrived Derby: Wednesday, 17th August

Turn off, on Kununurra - Wyndham Road

"Boab Country" - all different shapes and sizes. So much different character, in each boab and lots of seasonal change between trees prior to Kununurra and trees at Derby. From bare trunks, to littered with 'bobbly' nuts and sprouting leaves.

Jon got sick of me saying, ""Stop! Look at that one. I need a photo."

With the Cockburn Range in the distance we set off, with a few corrugations, a few stones, but the road generally, not too bad,
The crossing of the Pentescost River, didn't cause us too much trouble either.

It was Variety Bash time, on the Gibb River Road, with WA cars
going one way and NSW ging the other! Most were driving way
too fast and a little bit 'unconcerned about other road users!

What's all the fuss about?? A lot of the road was pretty good, and we
were surprised at how many 'bits' have been bitumenised these days. A
lot of the "jump-ups", that take a bashing, and don't handle the torrential
rain in the wet, have been tarred.
Stopped at Imintji Roadhouse! Why bother getting off the road?
I guess they're three times, or more, as big as anything else on
the road so they can just do as they like.

Can you see Queen Victoria? Amazing rock formation in the
Napier Range, just prior to turning off to Windjana Gorge

The ant mounds have changed from tall
and upright in NT, to squat and 'blobby' in
this part of WA
We made it! End of the Gibb River Road, 5kms from Derby

see next blogs for stops we made along the way
