Near the eastern most point of Australia

Byron Bay

Cape Byron

Byron Bay has the honour of being built around the point (Cape Byron) that is as far east as you can go on the Australian mainland.

The lighthouse was a different shape to many we have seen, with it's rectangular base. The day we were here, the weather was a little inclement, but I think most of the showers missed us. They did make for great viewing, out over the ocean tho', as we watched dolphins frolicking in the rocks at the base of the cliffs.

Byron Bay was fairly 'humming' at the time we were there, as NSW had just begun their school holidays and Easter was looming. We tried to get into a couple of caravan parks that were booked out and then gave B Bay up for a lost cause. Instead we went back south for a few kms, to another nice spot - Lennox Head.

Lennox Head also has great beaches, headlands and a few of the nice eateries & specialty shops that Byron Bay has, but not as 'well known'. The caravan park was situated between the beach and on the banks of a fresh water lake, so the kids could take their pick - lake or beach!

Again we were surprised and delighted when the Shaw's followed in our footsteps and pulled up, not next door this time, but two sites away! This was still close enough for lots of 'to-ing and fro-ing', and sharing of curry nights and roast nights! And there was still lots of beach that Jo and I could walk on in the mornings.

Curry night!

I'm not sure how I achieved this look, but it's clever isn't

it? This "weird" photo happened when I was attempting

to 'snap' Jon & Mark, and Luke just managed to dive in the

way! Quite effective really - I wish I could do it again!!?

We managed this time to leave Lennox Head the same day as the Shaw's and we were actually supposed to be heading in different directions. Although we did play tag up the road towards Lismore and pulled into the Visitor Info Centre nearly at the same time. The kids had a celebratory ride on the little train in the adjacent park. This has proved to be the last time of catching up, as we haven't seen them since. Who knows, we may meet them up the 'track', or if not we'll try and catch them in Perth when they are home, as we pass through!
