Wyndham - where 5 rivers meet

There's not a lot to say about Wyndham, the town. Let's just say that I'd not like to live there. However, an amazingly different and interesting place to spend a few hours checking out.

As most people do, if they make it to Wyndham, we went to the 5 Rivers Lookout. Wow! From this vantage point on the prominent landmark - the Bastion, you can see where the Ord, King, Pentecost, Durack and of course the Forrest Rivers are all jopined together by the Cambridge Gulf.

Kilometres and kilometres of water and tidal mudflats meet the eye. The water is not blue, but a murky kind of reddy-brown, where the movements of the tides keep the silty mud stirred up.

Looking east to where the Ord River enters the mudflats of the Gulf

Road train, after road train delivered to this stock pile of iron ore while we were at teh lookout. Waiting for a ship to load it into. We saw these trucks again later in the week as they drove up the Great Northern Highway, from a mine north of the Argyle Diamond Mine. I think we saw about 12in an hour long time slot.

The nicest building, by far, in Wyndham! Someone has taken the
initiative to cater for the tourist/coffee market. (They did have good
coffee too.)

A "works" project, constructed from rolls of wire and cement. Massive!

This was a "massive" real saltie, sunning himself on the banks of the King River

A Prison Tree, out from Wyndham. This huge Boab was about 13 of my arm stretches around it's girth. (If it had a barred door, we could have left him - right?) No life would just be way to peaceful and boring if we didn't have him around.
There was no "blurb" anywhere about this tree, but we did see some of the 'engraving' looked like it said 1886. So people have been looking at it for a while.

The Grotto, off the Wyndham/Kununurra Road - heaps of
potential but the water was revolting, even the fish were a
bit 'slimy' and some floating! Needless to say, we didn't swim here.

sitting on a very "grotty" rock - the big birdsliked to roost in teh trees above the grotto!?

I loved Jed's poem he wrote (under sufference!!) about his day at Wyndham:

Today we got up with the sparrows
We were going to play or swim in the shallows ...but didn't
So we hopped in the car and started to head off
It was a long trip and dead straight road
and lots of other cars.

We rocked into Wyndham with a flock of other cars and vans
We went to a lookout and could see far and wide
We drove to the new part of town We went and had lunch at the cafe along the main drag
Had a yummy bite to eat and and ice cold drink.
Went to a Prison Tree and a dam
Hopped back in the car and drove to a 'grothole'.

We flew down some steps
looked at the "Grotto"
and...slowly climbed back up.
Back in the car and home we went.
And had a look around
